Microfinance banks, fintechs and startups

Slower and more valuable. Verify first, research hard, offer what we can really do, and keep compliance in mind.

Verify the organisation

  • A microfinance bank must appear on the Central Bank of Nigeria's published list of licensed microfinance banks. If it is not on the list, we do not approach it.
  • Use the newest list in the publications section of cbn.gov.ng, and note its date on the prospect. Old lists are still online, and the central bank has revoked licences since. Also search for revocation notices for the bank's name before you write to it.
  • Match the name and address on the list to the bank's own website. A similar name is not enough.
  • Use only corporate emails, a partnerships form, or a business profile. No personal numbers.
  • Write down where you found each contact.

What we can offer them

  • Growth on their public pages (followers, likes, subscribers, comments).
  • App installs and sign-ups that need no identity details. Many are real people trying a product.
  • Awareness tasks and short feedback tasks.
  • Not available: any task that requires a customer's BVN, NIN or bank details.

Research before you write

Fill the prospect research brief: what they sell, who they serve, what they launched recently, what they might need, who decides, and how you found the contact. An observation you cannot support does not go in the message.

The message

Name something real about them. Describe one concrete pilot: for example, a small set of real Nigerian users trying the app and giving a short written reaction, or a defined page-growth campaign. Offer a short call. Never promise customers, revenue or downloads.

Pilots

Everything non-standard goes to the trainer before you promise it. A pilot has a small budget, clear completion criteria and a review at the end.

Use AI for this

Let an assistant do the heavy lifting

Banks and startups reward preparation. Have the AI help you digest what they have published and plan sharper questions, then write a short formal note.

Here is a public document or page from a company or regulator: [paste].

Summarise it in five bullet points. Then list five good questions I could ask a person there, and write a four-line formal email introducing myself as part of the FiniTasks marketing team and asking who handles partnerships.

Do not state any fact about the company that is not in the text.

Watch out: Never ask the AI whether a bank is licensed or has been shut down. Check the newest official list yourself. And never ask any contact for a BVN, NIN or customer data.

Exercise

Do this before you move on

Pick one licensed microfinance bank. Complete the research brief with sources, write the first message, and name the pilot you would propose.

Check yourself

Answer first, then open

A fintech wants customers to submit BVN through the task. Do we take it?

No. We never collect identity numbers. Offer an install or a non-identity sign-up task instead.
